A few months ago, we launched Aqoonyahan with a clear and ambitious mission: to bridge the opportunity gap for Somali youth by equipping them with practical, income-generating skills. Today, I am incredibly proud to reflect on the monumental success of our very first initiative, the
Digital Youth Empowerment Program (Cohort One).
The response was nothing short of overwhelming. With a theme of “Content Creation – How to Make Money Online”, we saw
more than 3,500 students register for the program, coming from all corners of the nation. This incredible demand confirmed what we already knew: Somali youth are not looking for handouts; they are looking for opportunities to build, create, and innovate. From this vast pool of talent, we selected 1,000 dedicated individuals to embark on a transformative journey, made possible by the visionary support of our sponsor, Waafi.
Our goal was not simply to teach theory but to deliver a tangible, hands-on learning experience. Over four intensive weeks, our hybrid program combined nationwide online training with exclusive physical meetups, creating a powerful sense of community and shared purpose. The curriculum was designed to be a step-by-step roadmap from idea to execution:
- Week 1: Finding Purpose – Students learned to identify their niche and analyze successful creators, laying the strategic foundation for their digital brand.
- Week 2: Creating with Free Tools – We dove into the practical skills of content creation, with hands-on tutorials for powerful tools like Canva and CapCut. Students began creating and sharing their first video drafts, receiving peer feedback within the community.
- Week 3: Monetizing Content – The focus shifted from creation to commerce. We explored how creators earn money and, crucially, how to package content creation as a freelance service for businesses. The key assignment was for each student to draft their first professional service offer.
- Week 4: Building a Brand – In the final week, we tied everything together, focusing on branding, storytelling, and audience engagement. The final project required students to publish their best work on a real social media platform, marking their official entry into the digital marketplace.
The impact of this program extends far beyond the digital certificates we distributed. We have ignited a movement. We have equipped 1,000 young Somalis with the confidence and skills to generate income, start freelancing, and build a powerful digital presence. We celebrated the top 50 performers at a final graduation meetup, but the true success lies in the countless stories of empowerment we are now seeing emerge.
The success of our first cohort is not an endpoint; it is the foundation upon which we will build. We are already analyzing student feedback to refine our model and are actively planning for Cohort Two.
To our graduates: thank you for your passion and hard work. You are the pioneers, and we cannot wait to see the incredible content you create and the businesses you build. To our sponsor Waafi and our dedicated team: thank you for believing in this vision.
This is just the beginning.
